Immigrant rights advocacy groups in California are calling on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and private prison company the GEO Group to be held responsible for the inhumane health conditions taking place at the Denver Contract Detention Facility (DCDF) in Aurora, CO following a chickenpox outbreak.

On Thursday, community members gathered outside the Miramar ICE Facility to demand that ICE restore visitation rights for Bud Conlin and Tomas Kennedy, two men who regularly visit immigrants that are imprisoned in Krome Detention Center.

Today, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Nielsen v. Preap. At the heart of the case is whether individuals with past criminal convictions are subject to mandatory detention without a bond hearing if they are not taken into ICE custody immediately after their conviction.

The Inspector General’s report confirms what we’ve documented through our own monitoring efforts — that ICE and the GEO Group systematically violate the rights of detained individuals and subject them to health and safety hazards.
