WASHINGTON, DC – Following the peaceful protest of Black asylum seekers held at the Pine Prairie ICE Processing Center in Pine Prairie, Louisiana, the Cameroonian American Council (CAC), Freedom for Immigrants, ISLA Immigration Services and Legal Advocacy and Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) filed a complaint with the Department for Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) calling on the agency to immediately halt and investigate the violence and discriminatory practices against Black asylum seekers and for their immediate release from solitary confinement.

MIAMI, FLORIDA — Following two recent COVID-19 related deaths in South Florida ICE prisons, a coalition of immigrant rights organizations will hold a Congressional roundtable on COVID-19 in South Florida’s ICE prisons. Loved ones of persons currently detained will also join the roundtable, including family members of Onoval Perez Montufar, a 51-year-old man who died of COVID-19 complications after being detained in ICE custody at the Glades County Detention Center in Moore Haven, Florida

Today, the Shut Down Adelanto Coalition held a press conference to share new information about the ongoing use of the industrial disinfectant HDQ Neutral, which contains hazardous chemicals, at the Adelanto Immigrant Detention Facility, run by the private prison company the GEO Group. In addition to the dangers already faced by those in custody, including lack of access to medical care, COVID-19 continues to spread and the misuse of HDQ Neutral is causing physical harm to immigrants in ICE custody.

San Bernardino, CA – On Thursday, August 13, the Shut Down Adelanto Coalition will hold a digital press conference to release new details in the case of José Tapete, whose deportation was stopped by community advocacy this week but who still remains at Adelanto, where guards are using HDQ Neutral, a cleaning chemical, to retaliate against him and others who speak out on conditions there.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA — A private prison company’s plan to expand immigration detention by a whopping 350 percent in Kern County was blocked today, after a federal judge ruled in favor of a preliminary injunction requested by Freedom for Immigrants and the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC). This follows the judge’s grant of a temporary restraining order on this same matter.

NEW YORK -- On Monday morning, organizations representing the Abolish ICE NY-NJ Coalition held a press conference to launch a campaign to free them all and present a joint executive order directed to both Gov. Cuomo and Gov. Murphy demanding the states end their complicity with ICE detention while supporting national calls to free everyone from immigration detention.

As the number of COVID-19 cases in ICE detention continues to rise, state officials must take immediate action to save lives.

There are thousands of people currently behind bars in ICE prisons that could be released to their families, however high bond amounts set by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or immigration judges keep them detained. The current system is inhumane and unsustainable.
