Abysmal conditions at Farmville include deadly medical neglect, excessive use of force, and other violations of human dignity, placing the individuals detained there at severe risk of harm

ARLINGTON, Va. — 25 groups across Virginia and the country are calling on Democratic Rep. Don Beyer to declare his support for the immediate closure of the Farmville Detention Center (Farmville), a privately owned and operated Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility infamous for its dark history of premature death and persistent medical neglect, intolerable living conditions, and human rights abuses.
“To prevent more deaths and cruelty against our community members, we call on you to move expeditiously and to apply the full weight of your office to push for the closure of the Farmville Detention Center,” write the groups. Led by the Free Them All VA Coalition, the letter signatories include human and civil rights nonprofits, grassroots and political advocacy groups, and faith-based organizations.
“Daily life inside this facility that profits from human suffering is defined by a culture of routine abuse and mistreatment,” continue the groups. “Documented abuses range from indiscriminate use of pepper spray, rotten food with worms, inadequate medical care and withholding of medication, improper and retaliatory use of solitary confinement, and other threats against people for protesting inhumane conditions.”
Amid overcrowding, the volume of calls from community members detained at Farmville, including Beyer’s constituents, has increased in recent months as the Trump administration has moved to indiscriminately arrest people en masse and expand the immigration detention system to record heights. Last month, a group of people detained at Farmville reported evidence of worms in their food. The letter cites dozens of more examples of abuse and testimonies from those who have experienced Farmville first-hand: “As demonstrated by the testimonies of courageous individuals and leaders who have spoken out about their experiences… Farmville has exhibited some of the most egregious cases of the systemic inhumanity characteristic of the broader detention system.”
The groups note that several members of Rep. Beyer’s party in the Senate have already called for the closure of Farmville even before the current administration due to “well-documented horrific conditions,” and that Beyer has previously campaigned on ending private prisons.
“In this moment of growing authoritarianism and unchecked terrorization of immigrant communities, we are calling on you to lead with principle and conviction for the sake of your constituents, exercise your historic oversight and legislative power, and honor your campaign promise of fighting to ban private prisons… It is imperative that the Trump administration be held accountable for its injustices against our community members. Terminating CoreCivic’s contract, permanently closing the Farmville Detention Center, and freeing our loved ones would be critical first steps toward justice and dignity.”

ARLINGTON, Virginia — 25 grupos en todo Virginia y el país son haciendo un llamado al representante demócrata Don Beyer para declarar su apoyo al cierre inmediato del Centro de Detención de Farmville (Farmville), una instalación de detención del Servicio de Inmigración y Control de Aduanas (ICE) de propiedad y operación privadas, tristemente célebre por su oscuro historial de muertes prematuras y negligencia médica persistente, condiciones de vida intolerables y abusos contra los derechos humanos.
“Para evitar más muertes y crueldad contra los miembros de nuestra comunidad, le pedimos que actúe con celeridad y que utilice todo el poder de su cargo para impulsar el cierre del Centro de Detención de Farmville”, escriben los grupos. Liderada por la Coalición Free Them All VA, la carta firmante incluye organizaciones sin fines de lucro de derechos humanos y civiles, grupos de base y de defensa política, y organizaciones religiosas.
“La vida cotidiana dentro de esta instalación, que se lucra con el sufrimiento humano, se define por una cultura de abuso y maltrato sistemáticos”, continúan los grupos. “Los abusos documentados abarcan desde el uso indiscriminado de gas pimienta y comida podrida con gusanos, hasta atención médica inadecuada y la retención de medicamentos, el uso indebido y vengativo del aislamiento y otras amenazas contra las personas que protestan contra las condiciones inhumanas”.
En medio del hacinamiento, el volumen de llamadas de miembros de la comunidad detenidos en Farmville, incluyendo a los votantes de Beyer, ha aumentado en los últimos meses, a medida que el gobierno de Trump ha intensificado las detenciones indiscriminadas y la expansión del sistema de detención de inmigrantes a niveles sin precedentes. El mes pasado, un grupo de personas detenidas en Farmville reportó haber encontrado gusanos en sus alimentos. La carta cita decenas de ejemplos más de abusos y testimonios de quienes han vivido la experiencia de Farmville de primera mano: “Como lo demuestran los testimonios de personas valientes y líderes que han denunciado sus experiencias… Farmville ha exhibido algunos de los casos más atroces de la inhumanidad sistémica característica del sistema de detención en general”.
Los grupos señalan que varios miembros del partido del representante Beyer en el Senado ya habían llamado al cierre de Farmville incluso antes de la administración actual, debido a las “condiciones horribles bien documentadas”, y a que Beyer ya había hecho campaña para acabar con las cárceles privadas.

La rescisión del contrato de CoreCivic, el cierre definitivo del Centro de Detención de Farmville y la liberación de nuestros seres queridos serían pasos cruciales hacia la justicia y la dignidad.”
